Last weekend we saw a record of 37 teams take to the courts at Pulman Park Arena for the 2020 College Sport Auckland Indoor Ultimate Championships, making it the largest ultimate tournament ever held in New Zealand.
Over 90 games were played throughout the day which featured fierce inter-school competition but also high levels of respect and the Spirit of the Game – essential in Ultimate due to the sport being self-officiated.
In the women’s division, Epsom Girls Grammar dominated as they have done for a number of years with their top team featuring a number of New Zealand U20 representatives. The final was contested by both Epsom Girls Grammar School’s A and B team with the A team victorious.
The Open Division had three strong teams battling for the top prize including defending champions Auckland Grammar School, who had won the event in the previous four years. After Takapuna Grammar School won a nail-biting semi-final in overtime against Westlake Boys High School, the team consisting of; Lomano Crichton, Noah Tu’isila, Aiden Kerr, Julian Ng, Matthew Boniface, Finn Barnes, Chris Williams and coached by Evan Barnes, stepped up to face the defending champions. The final was close throughout, but Takapuna Grammar School edged away at the end to claim the win and ensure a new name went on the trophy in 2020.
Epsom Girls Grammar School A showed their class, winning the Spirit of the Game Award in the women’s division as well as the overall championships. Westlake Boys High School 3 was voted the Spirit of the Game Award winner in the Open Division.
